Mozilla Firefox (or simply Firefox) is a free and open-source[20] web browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation and its subsidiary, the Mozilla Corporation. Firefox was released in November 2004,[22] and was highly successful with 60 million downloads within nine months, which was the first time that Internet Explorer's dominance was challenged.[23] Firefox is considered the spiritual successor of Netscape Navigator,[24] as the Mozilla community was created by Netscape in 1998 before their acquisition by AOL.[25] As of October 2015, Firefox has between 11.28% and 16.95% of worldwide usage as a "desktop" browser, making it the second most popular web browser.[26][27][28][29][30] Firefox is the most popular desktop browser in Indonesia, Germany,[31][32] and Cuba with 47.35%,[33] 42.27%,[34] and 85.93%[35] of the market share, respectively. It is also the most popular desktop browser in other Asian and many African countries.[36] According to Mozilla, as of December 2014 there were half a billion Firefox users around the world.
